3 Reasons Assisted Living Facilities With ABA Services Are Good For Schizophrenic Patients

Debbie Rodriguez

Searching for an assisted living facility for a loved one who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia can be a trying feat. Because your loved one can have different medical needs mentally and emotionally, not every facility is going to be a good fit. Looking for a facility that offers ABA (applied behavior analysis) as part of the care is usually a better option for patients that have psychological needs in addition to medical needs. Take a look at some of the reasons why facilities that offer ABA services can work well for patients who have schizophrenia.

ABA therapy tends to things the nursing staff may not have time to do.

The typical nursing staff in a facility setting does have a lot of training and skills to work with people who have schizophrenia. However, the majority of them will be focused more on providing necessary medical care. Unfortunately, this means that correcting poor behavior can be difficult to do because there is not enough time or staff to do so. In an assisted living facility that employs certified ABA therapists, your loved one will have people focused on helping their behavior on a daily basis.

ABA therapy focuses on rewarding positive behavior.

It is not uncommon for patients who suffer from schizophrenia to act out because of their mental illness. In a regular facility, these episodes of acting out may not always be handled in a way that will prevent the behavior in the future. ABA therapy is centered around behavior-reward ideas, which means positive behavior is rewarded. Therefore, when a patient does something positive, they will be rewarded and may learn over time to continue the positive behavior and avoid the negative.

ABA therapy is designed to make people comfortable with their environment.

Someone who suffers from schizophrenia can feel out of place, unwanted, and uncomfortable in a strange environment. Therefore, just the process of getting them into an assisted living facility can be a challenge. If the facility offers ABA services in-house, you will know that your loved one is going to be worked with to ensure they are capable of feeling comfortable in the new place. Part of ABA is looking at the relationship between the environment and the patient's behavior. Therefore, if there are things in the facility environment that cause behavioral issues, the therapists will work with both the patient and the environment to make changes.
