Are You Helping Your Elderly Parents at Home?

Debbie Rodriguez

You more than likely always realized that there would be a role reversal for you and your parents in the future. For many years, your parents cared for you and maybe even for your children. Now that that time has passed, you may have found that you have turned into the caregiver for one or both of your parents. From arranging for stair lift installation to planning activities for your elderly parents, here are some ideas that might help you to give them the sweet care they once gave you.

Home Modifications

Are you caring for your elderly parents at your home? Perhaps they want to stay in their own home as long as possible. Either way, you might have to make some modifications in your home. For example, if your parents are living in a two-story house, consider arranging for the installation of an in-home stair lift. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised at how affordable stair lifts are. The company that sells the one you purchase will install it and maintain it, if that is necessary. In-home stair lifts are very safe and easy to use. You might find yourself using one, too.

What about doorways? Are the ones your parents use wide enough for a wheelchair? Do you need to make adjustments in the bathroom? Perhaps consider installing an addition to the toilet that will make getting up and down easier. And a sturdy chair in the shower might be a very simple thing to do, and it will add safety.

Provide Activities

Of course, it's easy to turn on the television set, and that's often a very enjoyable pastime for anybody. However, you probably don't want your parents to become couch potatoes. Think of asking your parent or parents which activities they enjoy the most. You might find out that their requests will be simple ones like just going for a ride or going for ice cream. Do your parents enjoy your children, their grandchildren? If so, think of pairing them up and asking your parents to go through picture albums, sharing stories that accompany the photographs.

What about group activities? Would your mother and father enjoy being part of a senior day care facility? Or, it might be that they would enjoy field trips that are planned for senior citizens. Check with your local library to find out what's going on for elderly folks in your town or city.
